Edible & Medicinal Plants Walk

On Sunday, September 12, naturalist Sally Cornwell led 17 adults and children on an Edible and Medicinal Plants walk on private conservation land in Brookfield, a lovely property of woods and wetlands.
Sally identified numerous mosses and ferns and showed how to dig Indian Cucumber root, which has a crisp texture and mild taste like cucumber. Moose Mountains Regional Greenways is grateful to Trager by Kari Lygren for sponsoring this walk.
A second educational walk was offered by UNH Cooperative Extension Educator for Forest Resources, Deb Goard, and Professional Landscaper and MMRG Board member, Jon Batson on Saturday, September 25. This field workshop, focusing on Invasive Species Identification, took place in the fields surrounding the NH Farm Museum. Jon and Deb pointed out several areas where oriental bittersweet has suffocated the trees it is climbing on. They also discussed other problematic species, including barberry and burning bush, that are invading the NH landscape and crowding out the native plants on which our wildlife depends.
