MMRG Annual Meeting a Festive Success!

Nancy Smith Receives AwardMoose Mountains Regional Greenways (MMRG) had its best turnout ever for its 2011 Annual Meeting, held at the Moose Mountain Recreation Lodge in Brookfield. Eighty-six attendees enjoyed the festivities, which included a silent auction, catered dinner, award presentation, and slide show.

Art Slocum, newly elected Chair of the Board, emceed the event. In his opening remarks, Art noted that MMRG has facilitated the conservation of 2.5% of the total area of the seven communities in our service region. And he pointed out that it is thanks to donations from our supporters that these lands are preserved for generations to come.

The evening began with a silent auction in which bidding was enthusiastic to downright competitive on many items. Those most in demand included the stack of Winnipesaukee Chocolate bars, a gift certificate to 4J’s Earthworks, and a basket of homemade jams. All items were donated by individual or business supporters and the proceeds will help fund MMRG’s land conservation and educational outreach work.

A highlight of the meeting was MMRG’s first annual ‘Conservationist of the Year’ award, presented to Nancy Spencer Smith of Wakefield by former Executive Director, Joyce El Kouarti. In her tribute to Nancy Smith, El Kouarti recalled the “time, talent, and treasure” that Ms. Smith has contributed to MMRG’s many conservation successes and facing her, summed it up, “We couldn’t have done it without you!”

The evening wrapped up with a slide show and talk by Dave Anderson of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests. His photos of wildlife and scenery taken on area conservation lands kept the audience enthralled. Equally important was the underlying message -that these resources are protected due to the work of MMRG and other area conservation groups.

Thank You to our Silent Auction Donors!
